Application of greases, oils or semi-fluid greases allows a wide range of properties for situations that include high loads, intermittent duty cycle, water resistance and material compatibility requirements. Wear and coefficient of friction are often primary design considerations. Viscosity stability over a wide temperature range to reduce noise, leakage or lubricant displacement is also a leading consideration.

Synthetic fluid based oils and greases usually perform best. Solid additives- such as molybdenum disulfide and graphite can further enhance load performance and coefficient of friction.
