High temperature lubricants need to resist oxidation and evaporation in order to maintain a proper lubricating film. Low temperature lubricants should be formulated so that they provide the correct viscosity needed under sub-zero conditions without being too low in viscosity to prevent operation at higher temperatures. Engineers are now pushing the limits of switches, gears, cables, etc, by making them smaller and lighter in weight while increasing the requirements of the lubricant. Corrosion is the deterioration of a metal as a result of chemical reactions between it and the surrounding environment. Rust is the corrosion of metals containing iron. Insufficient corrosion protection will lead to the degradation of the part being lubricated and left unprotected corrosion can create pitted, irregular surfaces. Corrosion of electrical contacts will create excessive circuit resistance.
